Using tractors safely

Always read the operator's manual for the tractor you are about to use. Make sure you understand all safety issues, know where controls are and what they do and are aware of all safety warnings on your particular tractor.

Always mount and dismount from the left-hand side and only when the tractor is stationary. Never mount or dismount a moving tractor.

Before starting make sure:

  • seat belt is on if a ROPS is fitted

  • the tractor is in neutral and the handbrake is on

  • all power take offs, drives and hydraulics are disengaged

  • all bystanders are well clear.

Never work on or under a tractor while the engine is running.

Keep all guards and safety mechanisms in place.

Do not carry passengers unless the tractor and its ROPS are designed for the purpose.

Always hitch loads strictly in line with the tractor manufacturer's instructions. Loads that are hitched too high can cause rollovers.

Take great care on sloping ground. The danger of tractor rollover is greatly increased in this situation. Drive up and down slopes rather than across them.

Stay clear of overhead powerlines - at least 3 metres away from lines carrying up to 132 kilovolts and at least 6 metres away from powerlines carrying more than 132 kilovolts.

Wear the correct safety gear for the job.
