Reducing Manual Handling Risks

Lighten loads with:
  • smaller packages of raw materials or products

  • smaller carrying loads, quantities

  • half-filled carrying containers

  • two people to carry bigger loads.

Reduce bending, twisting, reaching movements with:

  • re-arranged work layout (eg: heavy loads stored at waist level)

  • tools and equipment kept within easy reach

  • office and desk equipment within easy reach

  • frequently used items kept at waist height

  • provide work tables and chairs with adjustable heights.

Prevent muscle strain and fatigue with:

  • warm up before fast work

  • allocated time for rest or exercise breaks

  • task change-overs so workers use different muscles

  • lighten loads (as above).

Maintain a safe working environment by making sure that:

  • the floors are even and non-slippery

  • there is good housekeeping

  • there is adequate lighting

  • there are no sudden climate changes (eg: extremes of heat, cold, wind or humidity).
