Reducing Manual Handling Risks
Lighten loads with:
smaller packages of raw materials or products
smaller carrying loads, quantities
half-filled carrying containers
two people to carry bigger loads.
Reduce bending, twisting, reaching movements with:
re-arranged work layout (eg: heavy loads stored at waist level)
tools and equipment kept within easy reach
office and desk equipment within easy reach
frequently used items kept at waist height
provide work tables and chairs with adjustable heights.

Prevent muscle strain and fatigue with:
warm up before fast work
allocated time for rest or exercise breaks
task change-overs so workers use different muscles
lighten loads (as above).
Maintain a safe working environment by making sure that:
the floors are even and non-slippery
there is good housekeeping
there is adequate lighting
there are no sudden climate changes (eg: extremes of heat, cold, wind or humidity).

Safe work procedures should:
get rid of unnecessary tasks
get rid of tasks involving sudden, jerky movement
ensure design of all new plant, equipment, containers, work processes and the work environment aims to eliminate or reduce manual handling risks
change the way tasks are done
change the way the workplace is organised
provide suitable mechanical aids such as trolleys, hoists, levers, adjustable height workbenches and seating, hooks and jacks
provide rest breaks during heavy or repetitive work
provide training and supervision to employees in how to carry out manual handling tasks safely.

Initial steps:
plan the task before work begins
train employees in the skills required
inform employees about potential hazards
make sure the workplace is kept clear to avoid bumping into or tripping over things
suitable protective clothing and equipment should be provided and worn.
