How do hazardous substances affect health?There are a wide range of health effects that can be caused by exposure to hazardous substances. Harm to health may occur suddenly, such as dizziness, itchy skin, burns, nausea; or it may occur gradually over years, such as cancer. Some people can be more susceptible than others. Some of the most common health effects of exposure to a hazardous substance include skin irritation or dermatitis, occupational asthma, eye irritation and headaches. Other health effects include chemical burns from corrosives, damage to the central nervous system, effects on the reproductive system which can affect the developing child, and cancer.
