P stands for the adult learning principle Problem-solving approach.

Problem-solving approach

Using a problem-solving approach offers learners the opportunity to use their ingenuity and creativity to solve real life problems in a learning environment.

A trainer uses a problem-solving approach with his learners.
Text alternative

By solving realistic problems, learners can see first-hand the purpose and application of the skills, knowledge and attitudes that are presented in the course.

This approach encourages learners to become more independent, creative thinkers and it involves them closely with the topic. It also allows you to get immediate feedback about the level of learners' skills.

How to apply this principle

  • Based on the curriculum, formulate realistic problems for the learners to solve. If the learners are practising measurement using guessing and estimation, give them some real problems to solve. For example: "You need to calculate how much carpet you need for your new bedroom, but you have no tape measure. Use your body, such as your hand span or pace to measure the room."

  • Problems can be simple; they do not have to be elaborate. See above.

  • Two heads are better than one. Problem-solving in groups can lead to more creative solutions and may be more enjoyable for learners. It also provides an opportunity for incidental peer-tutoring.

  • Make sure that the problems are of an appropriate level of difficulty for the skills and abilities of the learners you are working with. The problem should stretch them but not be beyond their capabilities.
