Setting the standard - weed management using IPM

Les Stewart, Weed Management Expert, Jirrahlee Botanic Garden.Large enterprises like Jirrahlee Botanic Garden need a systematic approach to weed management. So, how do we do it?

That's easy! IPM - an acronym for Integrated Pest Management.

What's Integrated Pest Management?

Jirrahlee's IPM policy.
Jirrahlee's IPM policy provides clear guidelines to follow.

At Jirrahlee, IPM has been defined as a "problem-solving approach to landscape and building management and is designed to prevent and control undesirable weeds, insects, fungi, and rodents".

As a consequence, in mid 1998, the first IPM policy was developed which provided precise guidelines for protecting the general public and staff from exposure to hazardous chemicals and pesticides. It was not only formally recognised, but also put into action at all levels of the enterprise - planning, prevention and management - for our public gardens to be a model of environmentally responsible practices.

Quarantine stops the transfer of pests, disease and weeds.

In broad industry terms, IPM endorses the use of any available method of control whilst taking into account all environmental factors. The aim is not to eradicate the pest but to maintain its population so that it's not an economic cost. The crop, landscape or nursery is managed as a whole and the management of pests, weeds and diseases is a complex, integrated system.

IPM is a more sustainable approach to managing weeds, pests and diseases.

So what does that all mean?

Well, our policy clearly states it this way:

"IPM relies on the use of site-specific information about environmental conditions, human activity dynamics, and pest biology and behaviour to prevent, resist and control pests that interfere with the purpose and use of a particular site."

In other words, IMP explores a variety of contributing factors from biology to cultural practices to remedy a problem so the solution has minimal impact on the surrounding environment.

IPM is usually:

IPM incorporates such cultural practices as sanitation and plant quarantine. It also involves spraying chemicals at the optimum period for maximum results. However, using pesticides really should be a 'last resort' and only within specific guidelines for least-toxic selection and use.

IPM is also compatible with other methods of control.

Pesticides are harmful to birds, animals, insects, fish and humans.

Remember, environmental factors that must be taken into account as part of an IPM program include:

IPM is a valuable system to use because it reduces the number of chemicals entering the environment via the soil and river systems. Pesticides can kill desirable insects at the same time as killing pests.

In closing, Jirrahlee's aim was to set the standard for others in industry to follow. Although our cultural practices are not perfect and we still have a little way to go, I'm happy to report that we are well on our way to responsible management. We have a number of exciting programs in place that are facilitating change. These include:

Volunteer talks to a group of visitors.
Regular tours inform visitors about the environment.

Jirrahlee believes these 'grass roots' initiatives provide a firm foundation for changing thinking about environmental sustainability and carrying out horticultural tasks in a responsible manner that protects the general public, staff and nature.

IPM does set the standard - Australia, like other countries such as Israel, Finland, Germany, United Kingdom, Japan, United States of America, is making a commitment to adopt environmentally responsible practices - let's all participate in looking after the environment!

Editor's note:

Lessons to learn
  1. IPM is a systematic management approach that protects humans and the environment by using environmentally responsible practices.
  2. IMP explores a variety of contributing factors from biology to cultural practices to remedy a problem so the solution has minimal impact on the surrounding environment.
  3. IMP is compatible with other control methods and usually is preventative, non-polluting and cheap.
  4. IMP is endorsed by industry in various countries around the world, including Australia.
