Improving your keyboard skills

Keyboard, or typing skills, are very useful when using the Internet. In this section on Improving your keyboard skills you will learn about some of the ways you can help improve your typing skills.

There are many typing programs you can use. Typing tutor is just one example and can be downloaded and installed for free on your computer.

Read through these instructions on how to download and install Typing tutor . The instructions will open in a new window.

There are also typing games, such as TypingMaster, that are a fun way to help improve your keyboard skills.

Many colleges and schools also hold classes for developing keyboard skills. Check with your nearest registered training organisation for details about if and when classes are available.



Typing tutor instructions

Print out these instructions if you'd like a printed reference to assist you with downloading and using Typing tutor.

Instructions for downloading Typing tutor

  1. Click here to download Typing tutor.

  2. Click Save when the following screen appears

  3. The next screen will allow you to select where you would like to save the program then click Save. It is recommended that you save to the desktop.

  4. The program will proceed to download and the following window will appear when it is complete. Click Close.

  5. Locate and click the 'ttutor.exe' icon on the desktop or wherever you have saved it.

  6. When the following screen appears, click Setup.

  7. Click OK at the following screen to continue to setup Typing tutor.

  8. Click on the Icon of a computer to commence setup.

  9. A screen will appear advising you that Setup was completed successfully. Click OK.

Instructions for using Typing tutor

  1. Once you have downloaded the Typing tutor application package, you will be able to use the tutor as often as you like. To access Typing tutor, click:

  1. From the screen shown below, you are required to select the exercise you would like to complete by clicking the downward arrow at the Select Starting Exercise text box. You then click the Start button. You can exit the lesson you are working on by clicking the Escape button. When you have completed your practice and wish to exit the program, click Exit.

TypingMaster instructions

Print out these instructions if you'd like a printed reference to assist you with downloading and using TypingMaster.

Instructions for downloading and installing TypingMaster

  1. Click here to go to the TypingMaster website.

  2. Scroll down to click on 'View all TypingMaster products and online services'.

  3. Click the link to 'TypingMaster Games Free'.

  4. Click the 'Download Games' link

  5. Click the 'Download Now' link under the heading 'TypingMaster Games 6.11'. You may have to click the option that reads 'if your download does not start click here'.

  6. Click OK.

  7. Select where you would like to save the program and click Save. It is recommended that you save to the desktop.

  8. The program will proceed to download and the following window will appear when it is complete. Click Close.

  9. Locate and click the 'tmgames6.exe' icon on the desktop or wherever you have saved it.

  10. The following screen will appear, click Yes.

  11. When the following screen appears, click Next.

  12. Continue to click Next until you reach the final screen, then click Finish.

Instructions for using Typing Games

  1. Once you have downloaded the Typing Games application package, you will be able to use the games as often as you like. To access TypingMaster Games, click:

  1. You can then choose the game you would like to complete.

You can exit the typing games at any time by clicking the Exit button on the top right corner of the Typing Games screen.

If you select to play bubbles, you then select whether you would like to practise letters of the alphabet in lower case only, both upper and lower case letters, or upper and lower case letters and numbers.

clouds and wordtris give you the options of practising on animals, cars or names.

There are details of how to use each of the games once you have made your selection.
