The domain

Remember when you looked at Internet addresses (URLs)? The domain part of the e-mail address is the same as the domain part of an Internet address. It has the same parts:

jackief@ozzienet.net.au

The host or domain name. This is the computer server where your mailbox is located. It is usually the name of the company that provides access to e-mail and the Internet.

jackief@ozzienet.net.au

These three letters indicate the type of group that owns the domain, for example:

  • .net usually is a network or service provider

  • .gov suggests a government host

  • .com a commercial organisation

  • .org a non-commercial organisation.

jackief@ozzienet.net.au

These two letters indicate the country that the e-mail service is hosted from:

  • .au refers to an Australian host

  • .nz - New Zealand host

  • .my - Malaysian host and so on.

When there is no country code, the host is located in the USA.
